Ameen wins a US$500,000 interest-free loan - July 2008 - - Ameen s.a.l. won an interest-free loan amounting US$500,000 from Cisco’s Rural Enterprise Development for Information Technology program implemented by Relief International – Schools Online (RI-SOL) in partnership with Cisco systems. A prominent player in the Technology world, Cisco Systems is concentrating its efforts at bringing the benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the Lebanese economy. With several projects at hand, Cisco created a network of training academies in several local towns and partnered with key actors to carry out its programs. Recently Cisco created and funded the Cisco Rural Enterprise Development for Information Technology (CREDIT) program after noticing a widening gap between urban and rural communities in regards to ICT. This program aims to contribute to utilizing ICT for business and job creation in rural Lebanon, further disseminate ICT skills, and bridge the growing divide between urban and rural Lebanon. To implement the CREDIT program, Cisco made a partnership agreement with RI-SOL, an international NGO present in Lebanon. The program consists of a three-year US$1 million no-interest loan aimed at starting a rural ICT business loan fund. Subsequently, the NGO invited several Lebanese MFIs to bid on the project; following which Ameen was granted half the loan value being US$500,000. With support from RI-SOL, Ameen will establish a separate dedicated unit to focus on Microcredit for rural ICT entrepreneurs, manage the loan value as well as client relationships of this rural ICT business loan fund. By the end of the three-year program, Cisco may convert this loan into a grant.
